Social work builds on a core belief – helping people to help themselves. It spans from the smallest good of supporting an individual in crisis to the larger good of shaping policies that impact society, empowering the marginalized, mobilizing resources, and becoming the voice of the voiceless. Social Workers work with individuals, families, and communities to create meaningful change. They do not just witness change – they become the change.

The Department of Social Work established from the academic year of 2026 - 2027, under the University of Madras that integrates theory with practice through field work, rural camps, observation visits to NGOs, hospitals, de-addiction centers, reception home, old age home & special schools, outreach programs and extension activities, preparing students not merely to study social problems but to create lasting social solutions.

Social work is dedicated to understanding and addressing the complex social issues that affect individuals, families, groups, and communities, particularly those experiencing vulnerability, inequality, and exclusion. Our research and teaching explore people's lived experiences, social conditions, and the structural factors that shape well-being, with the goal of promoting social justice, human rights, inclusion, and sustainable social change.

We bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world impact, training the next generation of social professionals to become compassionate leaders, ethical practitioners, skilled researchers, and strong advocates who empower individuals, strengthen communities, influence social policy, and create meaningful, lasting change in society.

The programme equips students with professional knowledge, practical skills, research competence, and leadership abilities through classroom instruction, fieldwork, community engagement, seminars, workshops, and internships. The department is committed to nurturing professionals who can contribute effectively to social justice, health & wellness services, community development, mental health and organizational well-being while upholding the core values and ethics of the social work profession.
